Polish IT student wins 3rd prize at prestigious scientific worldwide competition for young scientists

Piotr Węgrzyn, a computer science student at the University of Wrocław, won 3rd  place in the prestigious Regeneron ISEF competition in Los Angeles, known as the most important competition for young scientists worldwide. He presented his PCPU processor, which was noticed and awarded by the international jury.

The winner of the Polish Explory competition represented our country at Regeneron ISEF – the most important scientific competition, during which young people from all over the world compete for scholarships and research trips, internships and special awards.

Mr Węgrzyn won third place in the Embedded Systems category, presenting a functional processor created from scratch for machine use along with the entire computing system. The category is sponsored and supported by Hewlett-Packard.

Piotr worked on the project for four years in high school (he attended the 14th Belgian Polish Secondary School in Wrocław), and developed it at his alma mater – the University of Wrocław. The presented version of the processor is 47 times faster than its prototype, which shows how far he has come in working on his project.

Taking part in the finals of the competition was itself a great success. Poles’ participation in Regeneron ISEF was possible thanks to the accreditation received during the final of the Explory Competition organised by the Advanced Technologies Foundation. There, the delegation was selected by jurors – experts from innovative companies and scientists from Polish universities.

Poland was also represented by Kornelia Wieczorek and Diana Serjant – students of the 3rd Secondary School in Gdynia, who created their ecological fertilizer.
