Krzysztof Rojek, a pupil at Adam Mickiewicz High School No. III in Wrocław has taken gold at the International Olympiad in Artificial Intelligence (IOAI) held in Beijing. The event, now in its second year, drew over 280 of the world’s brightest young AI talents from more than 60 countries — including technological powerhouses such as China and the United States, where investment in artificial intelligence runs into billions of dollars.
From an initial field of hundreds, only eight competitors made it to the grand final. Rojek emerged at the top, clinching the coveted gold medal.
“It’s an incredible feeling. Three years ago, I started exploring AI purely out of curiosity, never imagining where it would lead. Competing here has been the best adventure of my life,” he said.
Participants faced a demanding programme of challenges in machine learning, computer vision and natural language processing.
“We didn’t just write algorithms — we also trained complex AI models to tackle problems inspired by real-world issues, from data analysis and image recognition to text processing,” Rojek explained.
The IOAI is aimed at secondary school students and features two stages: a scientific round, with both offline and on-site problem-solving, and a practical round, where contestants develop a visual project using AI tools.
