The prestigious mathematics competition „Baltic Way” for high school students is held once a year. In 2024, it took place in Tartu, Estonia on 14-18 November. Poland’s team emerged victorious, earning 77 out of 100 points.
„Baltic Way” gathers high school students from 11 Baltic nations to solve challenging mathematical problems. The competition is divided into four parts, including algebra, combinations, geometry and number theory. The Polish team under Dominik Bysiewicz and Łukasz Orski received the best results in all categories.
The Polish team received 77/100 points, which gave them a massive advantage over the 2nd team and 3rd team (Estonia 64 points and Germany 57 points).
In the areas of algebra and combinatorics, the Poles received a near-maximum score.
The Polish team scored 50% more points than Finland, Denmark, Sweden, and Lithuania and seven times more points than Iceland.
Members of the Polish team: Krzysztof Karwik, Jakub Pieczonka, Patryk Rosół, Tadeusz Rylski, Szymon Urban.
The competition is open only to representatives of 11 countries located on the Baltic Sea: Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Iceland, Lithuania, Latvia, Germany, Norway, Poland, Sweden and St. Petersburg (Russia). The competition takes place in a different country every year.
The important thing about the competition is that the tasks are solved in groups, not individually. Each team consists of five members and has to solve 20 tasks of high difficulty.
