Sad news coming from Poland’s eastern neighbour… On 5 December, the Supreme Court of Ukraine recognised the symbols of the 14th Waffen Grenadier Division of the SS as “not related to Nazism”.
The news was shared on Facebook by lawyer Vyacheslav Yakubenko, from the Ukrainian Institute of National Remembrance. “The Supreme Court has put an end to the lengthy legal epic initiated five years ago by representatives of the Russian world” – he proudly announced.

The ruling of the Ukrainian Supreme Court is actually upholding previous decisions dating back to 2015, including those of the Ukrainian Administrative Court of Appeal.
The Germans actually created the Waffen Galician SS formations in 1943 as part of the Waffen-SS from Ukrainian volunteers in Galicia. Later, Ukrainian police regiments were selected from the Waffen Galician SS formation, which, among other things, committed numerous crimes against Poles during the genocide in Eastern Lesser Poland and in the Lublin region.

Moreover, this military formation of Ukrainian volunteers under German supervision was known for its cruelty. Denying its relation with Nazism can hardly be perceived other than as an act of ill will, or just as a flat-out provocation.
