Young Polish mathematicians won 5 medals at the International Mathematical Olympiad

Polish students performed excellently at the 64th International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) held in Chiba Prefecture, Japan, from July 2 to July 13, 2023. Among 618 participants from 112 countries, our representatives achieved remarkable success, earning a total of five awards: one silver medal, four bronze medals, and an honorary distinction.

The International Mathematical Olympiad reigns supreme as the most prestigious mathematical competition worldwide. High school students from diverse corners of the world engage in this prestigious event, making it the oldest international subject Olympiad since its inaugural competition in Romania in 1959.

The Polish national team achieved the 32nd position in the team rankings, sharing the spot with Peru and Armenia. Under the guidance of mentors Tomasz Cieśla and Łukasz Bożek, the Polish team excelled with outstanding performance.

Mateusz Gabzdyl, representing V Secondary School in Bielsko-Biała, clinched the silver medal, marking his second achievement in the International Mathematical Olympiad. He also won a silver medal in the 2022 competition.

The following participants secured bronze medals: Konstanty Smolira from the Private High School named after Queen Jadwiga in Lublin, along with Michał Piotr Lipiec and Krzysztof Salata from V Liceum Ogólnokształcące im.
