Last week, the airlines cancelled more than 25,000 flights scheduled for August. The numerous cuts remind us of the recent pandemic situation, during which Europe’s flight connections virtually froze for several weeks.
Airlines all over the world have recently been reducing their connection networks en masse. The reason for such cuts is to be found in the fact that most of them are unable to fully meet the previously planned schedules due to labour shortages combined with a considerable increase in passengers after the pandemic.
An additional difficulty is the strikes of air staff in some airlines and some countries, as well as chaos at the airports themselves. All of this is to be added to recent staff shortages and an ever-rising demand for air travel.
The situation in the aviation industry is dynamic and changes day by day. According to à recent analysis conducted by Cirium, airlines around the world are believed to have cancelled a total of 25,378 flights previously planned for August 2022.
The biggest cuts hit Europe; nearly 16,000 flights were removed from August’s schedules last week. Here is a list presenting the (top 10) number of cancelled August flights per airline as of last week:
- Turkish Airlines – 4,408 August flights were cancelled last week
- British Airways – 3,600 flights
- Azul – 2,211 flights
- Korean Air – 2,133 flights
- EasyJet – 2045 flights
- IndiGo – 2030 flights
- Indonesia AirAsia – 1,906 flights
- Lufthansa – 1,888 flights
- United Airlines – 1757 flights
- Wizz Air – 1,256 flights
