The UK is to impose sanctions on Russia’s commanders and military sector

Following Russia’s repeated assaults in the eastern Ukrainian regions of Donetsk and Luhansk, and the continuous bombing of civilian infrastructure in Mariupol, British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss has announced a new wave of 26 sanctions – targeting the main Russian defence actors.

Since the 10th of March 2022, Russia has been bombing schools, hospitals and other civilian infrastructure transportation nodes. In response to these atrocities, the British authorities have decided to make an additional step toward the Kremlin by imposing new sanctions on key leaders of the Russian army.

The new round of sanctions targets people outside of Vladimir Putin’s military supporting his invasion of Ukraine as well.

The depravity of Russia’s assault on the people of Ukraine is plain for all to see. They are deliberately targeting hospitals, schools, and transport hubs in Mariupol and beyond – just as they did in Chechnya and Syria,” Foreign Secretary Liz Truss announced.

The UK is unyielding in our support for Ukraine and in holding Putin and his regime to account. Today’s new wave of sanctions hits the generals and defence companies that have blood on their hands,” – she added.

In the last two months, the UK has sanctioned over £900 billion of global assets from Russian banks and sanctioned Russian oligarchs as well as their families, whose net worth is estimated at approximately £200 billion.
