Poland adopted a resolution on the construction of large-scale nuclear power plants on the Baltic coast.
The project is to be conducted by the Polish Nuclear Power Plant in cooperation with Westinghouse Nuclear. The power plant is to be based on the American technology of AP1000 reactors.

By investing in nuclear energy, Warsaw sought to ensure energy security by implementing the objectives of the Polish nuclear energy program (PPEJ) and Poland’s energy policy until 2040, according to the Chancellory of the Prime Minister.

“After the Russian aggression on Ukraine, we have to take decisions on stable sources of energy for Polish citizens and companies. Nuclear energy is a safety switch for Poland’s energy system, and the new power plants will provide clean, cheap energy for decades. It is not only financially profitable but also environmentally friendly,” Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said during a press conference, as quoted by TVP World.
Several arguments are put forward by the government. First, the initiative is a step toward replacing dominant coal-based powers. Second, nuclear power aims to satisfy the growing demand for electricity and ensure grid stability due to the large-scale introduction of distributed renewable energy sources. Third, nuclear energy is expected to limit the role of natural gas as a transition fuel used to balance unstable renewable energy sources.
