What to expect during the coronation of King Charles III

King Charles’s coronation will take place on Saturday, 6 May 2023. The celebrations will last for three days, making Monday, 8 May, a bank holiday. The public can expect a grand procession, a religious service, and a special concert with numerous stars at Windsor Castle, among other things.

The coronation of Britain’s new monarch will take place 70 years after his legendary mother, Queen Elizabeth II. Back then, in 1953, over 8,000 guests from 129 nations made the journey to Westminster Abbey for a celebration that lasted three hours.

Following the death of the Queen back in September, Charles automatically took her place on the throne, after what had been the second-longest reign of a monarch in history.

In accordance with British tradition, the king will be seated on a famous throne known as Edward’s Chair. He will hold the sovereign’s orb, sceptre, and rod. The Archbishop of Canterbury will anoint him with oil before blessing and consecrating him. The new monarch will then have the prestigious crown of St Edward (2.23 kg) placed on his head.

As the Royal Family’s official website explains, the sovereign will take the coronation oath, promising to rule according to law, exercise justice with mercy, and maintain the Church of England.

Although this year’s coronation is expected to be slimmed down compared to that of the deceased Queen, London will be covered with Union Jacks and everyday life will virtually stop for these three days of celebration.

The most-awaited moment by people in Britain and abroad is most likely the solemn greeting of the Royals from Buckingham Palace’s balcony. The list of royal family members to be present for this less official part has been kept secret so far.

At 74, the new king will be the oldest Brit to be crowned in the country’s history.
