Last Saturday, Iga Świątek outplayed the Chinese Wang Xinyu without dropping a single game and moved into the fourth round at the French Open (6-0; 6-0). It was already the second time in a month she had won by the same scoreline after beating the Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in Rome in late May. The Polish 22-year-old needed only 51 minutes to get the job done.

On Monday evening, the Varsovian was facing the Ukrainian Lesia Tsurenko on the Suzanne Lenglen court. After a one-sided start of the match in favour of the Pole (5-1), the game was suddenly interrupted. Due to an injury, Tsurenko decided to retire. As a result, Iga validated her ticket for the quarter-finals in Paris in less than half an hour.

Iga will now face the American 19-year-old rising star Coco Gauff. When asked about her upcoming confrontation with the Pole, Gauff declared that she “been wanting to play Iga, especially here […] If you want to be the best you have to beat the best”. It looks like this match will represent the first true test for the Varsovian in the French capital. It is scheduled on Wednesday at 10 AM (UK time).

Świątek is now three wins away from defending her title at the French Open. Given her level of confidence, it’s hard to see who could stop her if she managed to remain fit. When it comes to the WTA ranking, she just started her 62nd week as world number 1.
