During an intervention and arrest of an aggressive man armed with a machete, one of the Police officers used his weapon, as a result of which another policeman was wounded. The officer died in the hospital. The incident occurred around 2 pm on Inżynierska Street in Praga District, Warsaw.
“It is with great pain and sadness that we inform you about the tragedy that occurred during today’s intervention on Inżynierska Street in Warsaw’s Praga Północ district. During the intervention one of the officers was wounded by a service weapon.” – the press service of the Warsaw police wrote in a statement.
The statement said that despite the immediate medical help given to the officer it was not possible to save his life.
“The police officer, from whose weapon the shot was fired, had been serving in the police force for more than a year, had completed the necessary training and passed the exams,” Inspector Katarzyna Nowak, spokeswoman for the Police Chief, wrote on the X platform.
The Police Headquarters also formed a public request “to refrain from making public judgments and forming opinions on the causes and circumstances of this tragedy.”
The commentators blame poor training of Police officers and serious staff shortages for the tragedy. It is said that Warsaw lacks some 3,000 police officers to secure the city effectively.
Interior Ministry chief Tomasz Siemoniak spoke with Police Chief Superintendent Marek Boroń about the situation. A special police prosecutor group is investigating the case.
