“Volhynia 1943. Victims, Accounts, Memorial Sites” – Exhibition and lecture in London

The Polish Library POSK in London invites you to a meeting with Dr hab. Karol Polejowski, Deputy President of the Institute of National Remembrance (IPN). The topic of the event will be the search for victims of the Volhynia massacres in Ukraine, along with the associated problems, controversies, and research perspectives.

The meeting will be accompanied by an exhibition prepared by the IPN Branch in Lublin entitled “Volhynia 1943. Victims, Accounts, Memorial Sites”.

On the night of 22–23 February 1944, units of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA) attacked the Polish village of Berezowica Mała in Tarnopol County (Tarnopol Voivodeship of the Second Polish Republic).

Approximately 130–135 Polish inhabitants were murdered in the assault. Victims were killed in their homes, which were then set on fire. This crime was one of many committed against the Polish civilian population in the Eastern Borderlands in 1943–1944.

The massacre in Berezowica Mała was part of the broader anti-Polish ethnic cleansing campaign carried out by UPA in Volhynia and Eastern Galicia, aimed at removing the Polish population from these territories.

A lecture dedicated to the Volhynia Massacre will be delivered by Karol Polejowski on 22 February 2026, the anniversary of the crime in Berezowica Mała. The lecture, held on the very date marking the tragedy in Berezowica Mała, will address the historical truth about the Volhynia Massacre, ongoing research, and the search for and commemoration of the victims.

British Poles is the media patron of the event.
