1st September  2019

Dear Mr President,

As the first Polish born British Member of Parliament, I have spent considerable time over the last fourteen years creating and strengthening links between Polish and British people as well as the Polish community and the UK government. I have also campaigned extensively  to utilise the Polish minorities around the world to intensify and bolster Transatlantic relations.

Great Britain and the United States have enjoyed one of the closest and most successful partnerships in history; from World War II, to Margaret Thatcher and Ronald Reagan to today. Another link between us is the considerable Polish Diaspora that have made our respective nations their home. The United States is home to approximately ten million people of Polish Ancestry and the UK has welcomed over a million as well.

As you will know, recently many US Senators signed a letter asking that the Polish Government compensate Holocaust survivors for the appalling abuse that they suffered. By 1945 an estimated 3 million Polish Jews and 3 million non-Jewish Polish citizens had been murdered. In addition, in Warsaw 85 per cent of buildings, and cultural history was destroyed and, in 1939, 38 per cent of all Poland’s wealth was stolen and some estimates have put the total cost of damage done to be as high as $1 trillion.

Some months ago, you spoke with the then Prime Minister, Theresa May, and advised her (rightly in my opinion) to sue the EU. I would like to ask that you advise and support the Polish Government to consider suing Germany for war compensation. I would be delighted to assist you in this campaign to help right not one, but two historical wrongs. We can ensure that Germany properly compensates Poland for the years of misery inflicted upon her and that victims of the Holocaust and the Second World War that are still alive can be properly reimbursed.

Yours sincerely

Daniel Kawczynski
