Manchester synagogue attack leaves three dead, including assailant

Three people, including the attacker, have been killed following an assault on a synagogue in Manchester, as confirmed by the police. The assailant was shot by an officer, while three others remain in a serious condition in the hospital.

Greater Manchester Police said there is “no ongoing threat to the public” and that a full investigation is underway. Explosive experts were called to the scene after reports of a “loud noise” when specialists entered the suspect’s vehicle, with all necessary precautions taken.

The alarm was raised in the morning when a car drove into pedestrians outside the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation in Crumpsall, north Manchester. Officers also confirmed that one man had been stabbed during the incident.

The British government announced it would step up protection at synagogues across the country in response.

The attack coincided with Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar, when many worshippers attend synagogue and observe fasting.

The assault took place while a morning prayer service was underway inside the building.
