Poland records its lowest unemployment rate in over thirty years

Recent data published by Eurostat reveal that after having fallen below 3%, the unemployment rate in Poland is currently the second-lowest in the EU, behind the Czech Republic with 2.1%.

Both countries are way below the EU average unemployment rate, which dropped by 1.1% (from 7.5% to 6.4%) in one year (from December 2020 to December 2021).

A series of official data analysed by economists suggest that Poland’s economy has dealt relatively in the midst of the unpredictable context surrounding the coronavirus pandemic. The latter is also recovering well from this crisis.

Figures dating back from last October reveal that Poland has recorded the second-largest increase in employment in the last two years from all EU member states.

For several weeks now, Poland (like many other countries) is being confronted to skyrocketing inflation, which may even exceed 9% in January. Despite the recent implementation of a VAT cut introduced as part of the government’s “Anti-Inflation Shield”, the first month of the year brought huge increases in the prices of energy carriers.

However, as mentioned before, there are also good news. Poland has recently been ranked the best performing EU country (and second in the world!) in a study conducted by the International Labour Organization regarding the rebuilding of the labour market after the outbreak of the pandemic.
