Poland will have spent over €8.3 billion on Ukrainian refugees by the end of 2022

A report published by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) reveals that Poland consecrates the highest share of money from the 38 member states to support Ukrainian refugees.

It’s estimated that around two-thirds of all people who fled war-torn Ukraine found refuge in Poland. Their number exceeds 5 million in total.

The OECD’s report refers to Poland as one of the countries where people opened their homes “in an unprecedented show of solidarity […] relying extensively on a system of volunteers to meet housing needs”, while the government provides financial support to private hosts in the meantime.

The organisation emphasises that Poland was one of the countries that opened new reception centres to meet the huge demand. Poles coordinated numerous units to accommodate large groups of orphans and unaccompanied minors.

All across the country (and beyond), fundraisings are being organised in order to provide the numerous refugees with food, clothes, shelter, medicines, and many other things.

Polish politicians, who are usually so keen on clashing with each other, proceeded to a much-needed “ceasefire” in the last months and joined their forces in order to coordinate the humanitarian help in the most effective way on the state and regional level.

Poland is to bear the highest financial cost of the ongoing refugee crisis, with an estimated €8.36 billion dedicated to that cause by the end of 2022.

This significant figure includes financial subsidies, education, healthcare accommodation, and living costs.

You get to know your friends in poverty”, as the famous Polish saying goes. Poles are indeed showing a beautiful example of empathy, kindness, and solidarity. The events we have been witnessing for the last eight months are historical in many regards.
