Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki has announced that The European Union will reimburse Poland for a large part of the costs of arms it has donated to Ukraine to help Ukraine defend itself amid the ongoing Russian invasion it is facing.
In the aftermath of his visit to Brussels in the context of the European Council summit, Morawiecki assured that he has “discussed the matter with the European Commission”.
“The European Commission will to a large extent, or at least in large part, to speak safely, reimburse our expenses and these weapons of ours that we have given to Ukraine,” the Prime Minister explained.
Since the outbreak of the large-scale conflict in late February, Poland has committed to providing more weapons and equipment to Ukraine than any European.
When it comes to Europe, Poland has also provided more humanitarian and financial support to Ukraine in relation to population than any other country, except Estonia and Latvia.
Mateusz Morawiecki emphasises that by defending itself, Ukraine also defends the whole region. “Today the fight for a free Poland is taking place on the Donetsk-Lugansk front line” – he underlined.
So far, countries of Central and Eastern Europe have shown more will to help their Ukrainian neighbours than some of their Western partners, mainly Germany and France.
Polish officials repeatedly appealed to them in an attempt to make their stance stronger in order to impose ever-stronger sanctions on Moscow.
