Rishi Sunak praises Poland’s “outstanding leadership”

On Friday morning, Polish PM Mateusz Morawiecki had a phone call with his newly appointed British counterpart Rishi Sunak. Both heads of government discussed matters of strategic importance for both countries. 

Sunak and Morawiecki spoke about the development of à common security policy in the framework of NATO. Both the UK and Poland are key elements of the Transatlantic Alliance. Morawiecki thanked Britain for the strengthening of Polish air defence. 

As the spokesman of the Polish Government, Piotr Müller wrote in an official statement Poland and the UK “have common goals – to ensure the diversification of energy supplies and to strengthen NATO’s defence potential on the eastern flank.

Another important topic raised during the phone call was the coordination of help for Ukraine. Here also, both countries have been among the most active in supporting their Ukrainian partners in the midst of the Russian invasion, which is destroying the country since February. 

Following his conversation with PM Morawiecki, Sunak praised Poland’s “outstanding leadership in Europe since the invasion of Ukraine” in a Twitter publication. 

Both leaders agreed that further Polish-British intergovernmental consultations would take place in the near future.
