Telegraph: New deportation strategy to include UK-born children of illegal migrants

The UK government has confirmed a significant shift in its immigration policy that could see children born in the United Kingdom removed from the country alongside their families if their parents’ asylum claims are unsuccessful. The Home Office argues this approach forms part of a more consistent and stringent system designed to deter unlawful migration and restore confidence in border control.

Under the updated plans, the place of birth will no longer automatically safeguard a child from deportation if their parents do not have the right to remain in the UK. This represents a break from traditional protections and aligns with wider reforms aimed at tightening the eligibility criteria for stay and removing perceived incentives to arrive irregularly.

The government maintains that each case will be considered individually and that voluntary return options will be offered before enforced removal. Officials say this policy will help streamline enforcement and reduce the backlog of unresolved immigration cases, although critics warn it may place vulnerable children at risk.

Home Office data indicates an increase in enforced removals in recent months, reflecting efforts to accelerate decisions and clear long-standing cases of those without lawful status.

Critics, however, point to reports showing that a relatively small proportion of rejected asylum seekers have actually been deported, raising questions about the effectiveness of current enforcement.

The policy has drawn sharp criticism from human rights groups and some political figures, who argue that children with deep ties to the UK may be unfairly uprooted.

Backers of the changes counter that a credible, firm immigration system must apply uniformly regardless of birthplace, particularly amid rising public concern over irregular arrivals.

As the debate unfolds, the government emphasises its commitment to balancing compassion with control.
