Transport Secretary Grant Shapps is about to welcome a family of Ukrainian refugees

In a Facebook publication, Grant Schapps informs that his new guests don’t know about the fact he is a government minister. However, he also thinks “they will have spotted it by now„.

The Ukrainian family’s arrival had to be delayed because the grandmother did not have the required documents with herself. However, Mr Schapps wrote that he hopes the situation would be resolved by next week.

Mr Shapps is among over 150,000 people across the UK who have signed up for a government scheme offering shelter to people fleeing Ukraine.

The initiative started as a result of recent criticism of the Whitehall response to the ongoing humanitarian crisis, which triggered a genuine exodus.

We had the conversation as a family about this, and of course, it means the house is more crowded and there’s less room for a desk to study at […] But every time we came to the end of the conversation, we thought 'But look at what’s happening to these people, look at what’s happening to their home,” Grant Shapps told Good Morning Britain.

„You just want to do something that will make a meaningful difference, even though it’s just the one family,” he added.
