Trump: “American troops will remain in Poland, and more could be deployed if Poles wish”

American forces will continue to be stationed in Poland, and their numbers could increase should the Polish government request it, US President Donald Trump said on Wednesday during talks at the White House with Polish President Karol Nawrocki. He emphasised the “special bond” between the two nations.

Trump was responding to a question on whether US troops would remain in Poland.

I believe so. Do you know something I don’t? If anything, we could actually send additional troops there, if that’s what the Poles want. They’ve long called for a stronger military presence,” the US President replied.

The US President went on to stress that relations between Washington and Warsaw were now closer than ever, attributing this in part to his personal rapport with President Nawrocki, whom he had endorsed during the election campaign. Trump added that it had been an honour to back Nawrocki and praised the new Polish leader for doing “a fantastic job.”

Speaking in the Oval Office on Wednesday, Polish President Karol Nawrocki said that Poles were glad to host American forces on their soil, adding that their presence also sends a signal to Russia that Poland and the United States stand united.

For the first time in modern Polish history in both the twentieth and twenty-first centuries our people are pleased to see foreign troops stationed in Poland. American soldiers have become part of our society,” President Nawrocki declared.

He stressed that the US presence also serves as a message to Moscow: “We are together.”

Nawrocki further pledged that Poland would raise its defence expenditure to five per cent of GDP.
