Russia deployed spy sensors in the waters around the UK to track British atomic submarines, the Sunday Times reported. According to media reports, the Russians also used some of their oligarch’s “superyachts ”as part of the spying operation.
The discovery of the spying action was “regarded as a potential threat to national security” but was never before made public by the British government.
Sunday Times also informed that Russian sea drones had been discovered near the communication cables placed on the seabed around Britain.
According to various media reports, four British nuclear-powered Vanguard strategic submarines equipped with nuclear warheads were spied on by the Russians.
„There should be no doubt, there is a war raging in the Atlantic. This is a game of cat and mouse that has continued since the ending of the Cold War and is now heating up again,” a high-ranking UK military commander commented for Sunday Times.
One of these vessels is always at sea as part of the so-called continuous maritime deterrent, the newspaper noted.
According to the media, the British Ministry of Defence has also received information that superyachts” owned by Russian oligarchs were possibly involved in the underwater reconnaissance in waters around the UK ahead of Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine.
Some sources of the media in the British Royal Navy claim that the UK should consider placing sea mines in strategic areas around Britain, which is a measure not used since the end of the Cold War.
