Historic London house once occupied by Joseph Conrad lists for 1.7 million GBP

A historic London house once occupied by the Polish-British writer Joseph Conrad is on the market for 1.7 million GBP. 

The property is located 17 Gillingham Street in the city’s upscale Pimlico neighbourhood, and a few hundred meters from Victoria Station. It spans over 1,200 square feet over four stories, with three bedrooms and two bathrooms. 

According to records with the Land Registry, the house was last sold in April 2013, for 1.275 million GBP. It was then listed in December 2021.

It once served as a boarding house where Joseph Conrad lived in the 1890s together with a diamond merchant’s clerk and a printer’s compositor, among others. 

This information is known thanks to a 2011 biography of the writer titled “The Several Lives of Joseph Conrad,” by John Stape.

Even though the 21st-century accommodations are not so luxurious anymore, some details of its past life have been preserved up until this day, such as the original fireplace located in the lounge where a beautiful Cole & Son Ardmore Collection wallpaper can also be seen. 

The property once called home by the author of “Heart of Darkness” consists of 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, 4 levels and 112 square meters It also features an original fireplace, a French Cheville parquet flooring, a kitchen with granite work surfaces in the basement, a utility room, a guest bathroom as well as a storage place.
