Robert Lewandowski has just turned 34 and remains at the top of his football career. His recent move from Bayern Munich to FC Barcelona was among the big stories of this summer.
The Polish superstar has been the best football player in the world in 2021. After winning it all in 2020 with his club Bayern Munich, he achieved the unthinkable by scoring 41 goals in only 29 Bundesliga games, breaking Gerd Müller’s mythical record.
The exact reasons why he has been robbed of both the Ballon d’Or 2020 and 2021 remain unclear. What is sure is that the Polish sniper continues to perform at the highest level. He’s recently been selected among the 30 nominees for this year’s prestigious individual award for the 7th time.
Although the peak of his career is more than likely already behind him, “RL9” is about to undertake several exciting challenges. On the one hand, he just arrived in Barcelona with the ambition to put the legendary Spanish club back to the top. On the other hand, “Lewy” will lead the Polish national team at the long awaited World Cup, which starts in November.
If the Varsovian decided to retire today, he’d already be remembered as one of the greatest strikers in football history. He left Germany as the second-best all-time scorer of the Bundesliga with 312 goals (behind Gerd Müller who scored 365).
The Polish sniper is the record holder of the most goals scored for the Polish national team (66). He is the third-best scorer in the history of the Champions League (86), behind the legendary Cristiano Ronaldo (140) and Lionel Messi (125). It’s likely that Lewandowski will cross the symbolic 100 goals in this competition in the upcoming year(s).
Lewy is also the third-best active goalscorer overall, with over 580 goals. Here again, only multiple time Ballon d’Or winners Messi and Ronaldo do better. The Argentine is about to pass the bar of 770 goals, while the Portuguese approaches the 820 mark.
The good news for Polish fans is that there is more to come. The Polish number 9 is in such a great shape that – except in the case of an injury – we will enjoy him scoring goals for several years to come.
