Queen Elizabeth II exceptionally won’t return to London to appoint the new British PM

Queen Elizabeth II will receive the UK’s new prime minister at Balmoral rather than Buckingham Palace.

Buckingham Palace informed that the queen would not be making the 1,000-mile round trip from Scotland. Instead, outgoing PM Boris Johnson is expected to travel north from London on 6 September with his successor.

The palace explained the decision by emphasising the 96-year-old monarch’s „episodic mobility problems”. These ongoing issues, which she has been facing for nearly a year, have also hampered other occasions, including her Platinum Jubilee celebrations in June.

Next week’s celebration will be the first time a prime minister has officially tendered their resignation or been appointed outside of Buckingham Palace during the Queen’s seventy years on the throne.

Britain’s new PM will be announced on Monday, following the closing of the votes. As we already mentioned on our portal, current Foreign Secretary Liz Truss is the most likely to make it to 10 Downing Street.
