Daniel Kawczynski MP, Chairman of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Poland commemorates the 80th Anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising.
Commenting on the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, Daniel said:
‘As we commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, we honour the memory of the brave Jewish fighters who revolted against German Nazi oppression and tyranny. Their struggle against impossible odds is a testament to the human spirit and the unbreakable will to resist.
‘The heroes of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, such as Mordechai Anielewicz and Frumka Plotnicka from the Jewish Combat Organisation, inspired their fellow Polish Jews to fight for their freedom and dignity, despite the overwhelming force of the ruthless German Nazi regime. They knew their chances of success were slim or impossible, but they refused to be cowed by fear and desperation.
‘Warsaw, the city of my birth, has seen much suffering and sacrifice. It was also the site of the Warsaw Uprising of 1944, which saw the majority of Polish Warsaw residents take up arms against the Germans. The Nazis were ruthless, and just as they annihilated the Warsaw Ghetto, they also destroyed the whole city of Warsaw just a year after. However, these uprisings symbolise the people’s determination to resist oppression and fight for their freedom.
‘As the Chairman of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Poland, last year, I led a delegation from the House of Commons and the House of Lords to Warsaw. Apart from learning about the strengthening of British-Polish relations, we have also commemorated the brave Jewish heroes of the past. We all walked and noticed the marks commemorating the walls surrounding the historical Jewish Ghetto in Warsaw. As we reflect on these pivotal moments in history, we must ensure that the legacy of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising is never forgotten and I will continue to raise awareness amongst fellow politicians about this. We must remember the names of those who fought and died, such as Anielewicz and Plotnicka, and honour their bravery and sacrifice. Their example inspires all who seek to build a better world and prefer to die rather than be enslaved. I strongly hope that more can be added to our education curriculum to commemorate and remember these brave fighters, and I will do whatever possible in my capacity to promote these issues.
’It is our responsibility to ensure that future generations learn about the heroism of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising and understand the lessons of this tragic chapter in history. By doing so, we must forever honour the memory of those who fought and died for the cause of freedom. Never forget!’
