Robert Lewandowski added yet another national team record to his already long list of achievements. At the occasion of Poland’s recent win against Latvia (2:0), the Varsovian became the oldest goalscorer for the White and Reds.
In the 48th minute, “Lewy” converted Nicola Zalewski’s cross from the left side into a goal with a precise header. It was his 82nd goal in his 146th appearance for the national team. His record 31 assists for Poland are also worth mentioning.
Lewandowski is both the best goalscorer of the Polish national team in history and the player with the most appearances for his country. Barcelona’s clinical number 9 has also been Poland’s captain for almost a decade and more precisely 84 matches, which is another record.
This week, he also became the oldest goalscorer for the White and Reds. In the match against Latvia he broke the record set by Lucjan Brychczy more than half a century ago. The legendary Legia striker scored his last goal for the national team in August 1969, at the age of 35 years and 75 days. Lewandowski was precisely 35 years and 93 days old when he assured the win for his team on Tuesday.
Lewandowski has been Poland’s main asset on numerous occasions. Besides chasing the symbolic threshold of 100 international goals, he will also do what he can to qualify Poland for the Euro 2024 during the play-offs of the upcoming spring.
After a catastrophic qualification campaign, the White and Reds will need to defeat two teams to make it to the prestigious tournament. On 21 March 2024, Poland will face Estonia. Soon after that, the Polish team could face either Wales, Ukraine, Finland, or Iceland.
