On Thursday, Iga Świątek announced that she has appointed Wim Fissette as her new coach, with the upcoming WTA Finals marking the beginning of their collaboration.
“I said many times that my career is a marathon for me, not a sprint and I’m working, operating and making decisions with this approach. I want to say that I’m very excited and looking forward to working with Wim” – the world number 1 wrote on her Instagram page.
Swiątek also confirmed her split from coach Tomasz Wiktorowski following the US Open, ending a successful partnership that began in late 2021. Under Wiktorowski, the Varsovian claimed four Grand Slam titles, including this year’s Roland Garros – her fourth crown in Paris already.
Wim Fissette is a well-known Belgian tennis coach and former professional tennis player. He has accumulated extensive experience with several stars on the WTA tour such as Kim Clijsters, Simona Halep, Angelique Kerber, Victoria Azarenka, and Naomi Osaka, among others.
“I am very excited to work with Iga and join her team of experts. […] Iga is a role model for many players due to the constant intensity with which she plays and the focus she puts on her work. I am all the more looking forward to this collaboration, hoping that we will both improve and strive to fulfill our sporting dreams. Jazda, Iga!” – he told Interia.
Fissette first gained attention when he helped guide Kim Clijsters to multiple Grand Slam titles, particularly during her successful comeback in 2009. His reputation as an excellent coach grew as he continued working with other high-profile players, helping them achieve significant victories, including Grand Slam wins and consistent top rankings in the WTA Tour.
Throughout his career, Fissette has been known for his strategic approach, attention to detail, and ability to adapt to his players’ strengths and needs. His coaching style has earned him a reputation as one of the leading coaches in women’s tennis.
