Poland launches new naval intelligence vessel named ORP “Jerzy Różycki“

In a major step toward modernising its naval intelligence capabilities, the Polish Navy has launched the Jerzy Różycki, a new electronic intelligence (ELINT) vessel, at the Remontowa Shipbuilding S.A. shipyard in Gdańsk. The launch ceremony marked a significant milestone in Poland’s Project 107 Delfin program, which aims to enhance national and regional security through advanced maritime reconnaissance.

Named after the famed Polish mathematician and cryptologist, Jerzy Różycki was christened immediately after its launch, underscoring the symbolic and strategic weight of the occasion.

The vessel is the first of two state-of-the-art ELINT platforms being developed under a 2022 agreement with Swedish defence firm Saab, which is overseeing the design, systems integration, and long-term support for the Delfin-class ships.

Construction of Jerzy Różycki began with the cutting of steel in April 2023, followed by the keel laying in November.

The ship is now entering its next phase: outfitting with sophisticated surveillance and intelligence-gathering systems tailored for modern naval reconnaissance. Sea trials are scheduled to begin shortly, with the vessel expected to be formally commissioned into the Polish fleet in 2026.

At the launch event, a Saab representative described the project as emblematic of Europe’s growing focus on defence innovation.

This vessel reflects the kind of advanced technologies and capabilities Europe needs to confront emerging threats and safeguard our societies,” the official said.

The Delfin-class ships are modelled on Sweden’s highly capable HMS Artemis, although the exact specifications of the Polish versions remain classified. Available data on the reference platform indicate a length of approximately 74 meters and a displacement of around 2,200 tons. These vessels are purpose-built for electronic reconnaissance and signal intelligence missions in increasingly contested maritime environments.

Under the SEK 6.7 billion (GBP 524 million) contract, a second ELINT vessel, named Henryk Zygalski, is already under construction and is scheduled to join the fleet following the Jerzy Różycki’s entry into service. Both ships are expected to play a pivotal role in boosting Poland’s maritime situational awareness and interoperability with NATO allies.
