An English city was named the most beautiful in the world

The city of Chester, which has less than 80,000 inhabitants, was named the world’s most beautiful by researchers from Online Mortgage Advisor.

Why Chester, you may ask. Well, it’s thanks to it having the highest percentage of buildings that align with the so-called “golden ratio” – the mathematical ratio believed to reflect natural aesthetic perfection.

Online Mortgage Advisor ranked the world’s most eye-catching cities by scanning Google Street View for front-facing photos of hundreds of streets and over 2,400 buildings from cities across the globe.

They plotted points at the corners of each construction and calculated the proportion between its longest and shortest sides, to compare it later to the golden ratio.

Chester scored a remarkable 83.7%, beating Venice to the top spot (with 83.3%). London came third with 83%, followed by Belfast (82.9%) and Rome 82%.

The golden ratio (1:1.618) reflects a set of proportions that can be observed in natural phenomena such as flowers, hurricanes, or even human DNA.
