Chelsea took a commanding step towards the UEFA Conference League semi-finals with a convincing 3–0 win away to Legia Warsaw on Thursday night. The Blues produced a dominant display in the Polish capital, although they were made to work by a spirited home side backed by a passionate crowd of over 29,000 at the Stadion Wojska Polskiego.
Despite the comprehensive scoreline, Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca was full of praise for the great atmosphere generated by Legia’s loyal supporters, particularly those in the famous “Żyleta” stand.
“I expected this kind of setting and atmosphere,” Maresca said post-match.
“I had seen Legia’s previous games. To play in a stadium like this, with such an incredible atmosphere, is a real privilege. I told my players they needed to embrace it—and I think we handled it very well,” Maresca added.
Legia fans put on an eye-catching display with pyrotechnics and choreographed banners, refusing to be silenced even as the goals stacked up against their side.
Chelsea, who didn’t field their absolute strongest XI, still boasted an enviable lineup featuring the likes of Cole Palmer, Jadon Sancho, Christopher Nkunku, Noni Madueke, and Marc Cucurella.
Among the standout performers was 19-year-old Tyrique George, who scored his first senior goal for the club—a moment widely celebrated in the British press.
The visitors could have added further gloss to the scoreline, but their finishing let them down at times. Christopher Nkunku had the chance to make it 4–0 from the spot in the 73rd minute, only to be denied by a fine save from Legia keeper Kacper Tobiasz.
“He’s still building his confidence,” Maresca said of Nkunku. “He needs to keep working hard to get back to his best.”
Chelsea currently sit fourth in the Premier League and turn their attention to domestic matters this weekend, with a clash against Ipswich Town in round 32 on Sunday.
The return leg against Legia will take place at Stamford Bridge on 17 April, where Chelsea will be favourites to finish the job and book their place in the semi-finals. There are still last tickets available to buy here.
