The yearly Tall Building Survey published by New London Architecture reveals that nearly 600 new towers over 20 storeys or more are currently under construction or being planned across London.
The report classifies the different skyscrapers by borough. For example, Tower Hamlets has a staggering total of 95 skyscrapers. The large majority of them are located in London’s commercial centre – Canary Wharf.
Southwark is the borough with the second-largest amount of high-rise blocks already built or on the way, followed by Greenwich (50) and Newham (46).
Since the 1990s, Canary Wharf has experienced a remarkable expansion. Massive office buildings quickly became part of the scenery.
More recently, it is mostly residential buildings which have been added to the skyline, given the fact that an increasing number of people moved to the area.
According to the office for National Statistics, Canary Wharf’s population is set to double in the course of just ten year, reaching up to 100,000 inhabitants.
Many locals have already expressed their concern regarding how quickly the series of new skyscrapers is being completed in this part of London.
The most recurrent argument is that dozens of additional skyscrapers would damage the area.
