On Wednesday the 29th of June, the three Polish players competing for a ticket for the third round got eliminated. The next day, Polish fans could rejoice as the two Poles on the schedule completed their mission: the qualification for the third round at the All England Club.
The first Pole to make it to the third round was Magdalena Fręch. The 24-year-old dominated the Slovakian Anna Karolina Schmiedova in two sets (6:4; 6:4) in 1 hour and 39 minutes.
By validating her place in the third round in London, Magdalena Fręch achieved the best results of her career. She will face the Romanian ex-world number 1 Simone Halep on Friday.
A few hours later, it is our national champion Iga Światek who managed to defeat the Dutch Lesley Pattinama Kerkhove in a struggle that lasted over 2 hours. The Pole won the first set without too much difficulty (6-4).
Things got more complicated in the second set, during which Pattinama Kerkhove managed to destabilise world number 1 (4:6).
Eventually, Iga got the things straight in the ultimate set by displaying the level of tennis which made her the indisputable queen of 2022 so far. The young Varsovian became unplayable at the clutch moments and sealed the deal (6:3).
Iga Świątek has now won 37 matches in a row, a truly remarkable achievement, that is the longest winning streak of the century so far. She will face the French Alizé Cornet (former number 11) in the third round on Friday.
