Despite a slight loss of speed at the start of the second set, Iga Swiatek was never worried by Cori Gauff and won Roland-Garros for the second time in her career after a one-sided final.
What a delight it was to watch our champion shine once again in Paris! Iga Świątek’s second victory means a great deal, not only for her personally but also for the whole nation and the history of tennis.
Let’s start with some numbers. At 21, Iga Świątek has just won her second French Open. This new victory in the French capital allows the Pole to largely comfort her position at the top of the WTA ranking.
With 8631 points, she has accumulated over 4,300 more than her closest rival, the Estonian Anett Kontaveit (4326). We are only in June, and the young Varsovian is virtually assured of finishing the year on the throne of world number 1.
Besides, Iga has equalled Venus Williams’ all-time record of the longest winning streak in the history of female tennis. Given her current level of tennis and her confidence, the breaking of this record is expected to be a formality. This 35th consecutive victory also allowed the WTA tour’s boss to win her sixth consecutive title.
The Polish winning machine inspired Polish journalists to write about this year’s edition of the French Open as “Poland Garros”. Let’s hope that Iga will manage to maintain such an unbelievable for the next months and years!
No matter what the future will bring, there is no doubt that Iga Świątek has already a whole nation euphoric with her great achievements, which already exceed by far what anyone would have expected, except Iga and her team, perhaps.
