According to the data presented by Eurostat Poland noted the EU’s highest population decrease. The population of the country lost another 138,2 thousand inhabitants in 2023.
The information was posted on X by ING Economics.
Overall, population declines were recorded in seven countries, the largest of which was Poland. Increases were seen in the remaining 20 countries, with the largest being Spain (+525, 100), Germany (+330, 000) and France (+229, 000).
Eurostat notes that, after a decline in 2020 and 2021 due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, the EU population increased for the second consecutive year, from 447.6 million on 1 January 2023 to 449.2 million on 1 January 2024.
A positive migration balance in the EU outweighed the negative birth rate (more deaths than births).
In 2023, 272,000 children were born in Poland, more than 30,000 fewer than in 2022 and the fewest since the end of the Second World War. The number of deaths was more than 409,000 in Poland in 2023, about 40,000 fewer than in 2022.
