The Polish women’s national team has made history by qualifying for the European Championship, set to take place in Switzerland in July 2025.
Although Poland did not advance through the group stage of the qualifiers, their impressive performance in the playoffs secured them a spot in the tournament. In the semifinals, the Polish team defeated Romania with scores of 2-1 and 4-1, and in the final, they triumphed over Austria twice with identical 1-0 victories.
The latter was achieved thanks to a goal by FC Barcelona’s striker Ewa Pajor. The young star, who celebrated her 28th birthday earlier this week, continues to impress since joining the Blaugranas in June. After the win against Austria, Pajor could not contain her joy. With tears in her eyes, she simply stated that this was “the best day of her life.”
Poland’s number 9 is widely regarded as one of Europe’s finest forwards. She has been a standout player for VfL Wolfsburg since 2015, having previously played for Medyk Konin. In October 2023, she made history as the first Polish player to be ranked among the top 30 female footballers worldwide, achieving 18th place in France Football magazine’s prestigious poll for the 2022/23 season. She also serves as the captain of Poland’s women’s national team.
The Euro 2025 tournament, for which she led the White and Reds to qualification, will run from 2 to 27 July, featuring 16 teams divided into four pots for the group stage draw. Poland will be placed in the fourth pot, along with Finland, Portugal, and Wales. Switzerland, as the host nation, will automatically occupy the top spot in Group A. Other top seeds in the first pot include Spain, Germany, and France. The second pot will consist of Italy, Iceland, Denmark, and England. The group stage draw is scheduled for 16 December in Lausanne.
From the group stage, the two best teams from each group will progress to the quarterfinals. The tournament will culminate with the final match on 27 July in Basel. England, the reigning champion, will aim to defend their title after their victory in the 2022 edition of the championship.
