Polish bridge players won two gold medals at the 16th World Bridge Games in Buenos Aires. The representatives of Poland were the best in the open and mixed-team competition.
A non-participating player, Marek Pietraszek, led the world champions team in the open category.
The victorious team members were Krzysztof Buras, Wojciech Gaweł, Rafał Jagniewski, Przemysław Janiszewski, Kamil Nowak, and Wojciech Strzemecki.
Polish players defeated the Italian team in the competition final by 207:156. But their most important test was the semi-final victory over the Swiss ‘Dream Team’, which consisted of six players ranked in the top six of the world ranking.
The gold medal in the mixed doubles competition (led by captain Piotr Kołuda) was won by the team of Katarzyna Dufrat, Danuta Kazmucha, Justyna Żmuda, Maciej Hutyra, Piotr Marcinowski and Piotr Zatorski.
In the medal match, Poland won over China 195:184.
Sweden scored gold in the women’s competition, while the US won in the senior category (65+).
The World Bridge Games is the most prestigious event in this sport. The competition is held every four years with the participation of national teams. The event used to be officially called the Bridge Olympics.
