Queen Elizabeth II encourages to find hope in the Gospel

Queen Elizabeth II remains a source of inspiration for many. Despite her advanced age and the recent death of her husband Philip, she continues to be active in public life. In early December, the British monarch was supposed to give a speech at the assembly of the Synod of the Church of England.

However, the Queen could not be present on that day for health reasons. In the Queen’s absence, her speech was read out by Prince Edward, who referred in an emotional fashion to the challenges facing the Christian faith in today’s society.

Reminding the audience that over half a century had passed since she and her late husband Prince Philip went to the first Synod, the Queen mentioned what was believed to be true then and throughout the past centuries:

None of us can slow down the passage of time; and while we often focus on what has changed over the years, many things remain the same, including the Gospel of Christ and His teachings. (…)  Recent years have been particularly difficult for believers. They resulted in unprecedented restrictions on access to comforting and reassuring public services. For many, it was a time of anxiety, sadness, and exhaustion. However, the Gospel has brought hope now, as it has been throughout the centuries,” Queen Elizabeth II emphasised.

In her speech, the Queen reminded us that whatever happens in our lives, in the midst of chaos, uncertainty and joy, we should always rely on the Gospel, which “helps us to confirm ourselves in God’s unchanging love.”

Already a few weeks ago, the 95-year-old monarch did not participate in the service on National Remembrance Sunday to commemorate war veterans. This absence reminded many of the advanced age of the queen.
