Robbie “Hagrid” Coltrane dies aged 72

On Friday 14 October, Harry Potter and Cracker actor Robbie Coltrane died aged 72.  

The Scottish star, born Anthony Robert McMillan, was best known for starring Hagrid in the Harry Potter series. The latter also brilliantly played the criminal psychologist Dr. Eddie “Fitz” Fitzgerald in the popular ITV drama.

Robbie Coltrane will be remembered by many as one of Britain’s most appreciated comedians. His agent Belinda Wright urged his numerous fans to “please respect Robbie’s family’s privacy at this distressing time.”

Robbie was a unique talent, sharing the Guinness Book of Records’ Award for winning three consecutive Best Actor Baftas for his portrayal of Fitz in Granada TV’s series Cracker in 1994, 1995, and 1996 with Sir Michael Gambon” – she added. 

Coltrane made his screen debut in 1980 in Death Watch, before going in the direction of comic movies such as The Supergrass (1985) and The Pope Must Diet (1991). He also became famous for appearing on comedy shows like The Comic Strip Presents and The Young Ones.

The Scottish actor also appeared in two James Bond movies, Goldeneye and The World Is Not Enough, during the 1990s. He played a former KGB officer who turned into a mafia gang leader. 

He became the first actor to be cast in the Harry Potter series. J. K. Rowling personally picked him out to perform the beloved Hagrid character.
