Robert Lewandowski has become the third-ever player to reach the historic mark of 100 goals in the Champions League. The Pole chases the “GOATS” of the game Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi who respectively stopped the counting at 140 and 129 goals in the prestigious European competition.
FC Barcelona was playing home against Brest on Tuesday night. The Catalans needed to get back their somewhat shaken confidence after a disappointing draw against Celta Vigo (2-2) last weekend. It was their first draw of the season, missing the chance to recover from the unexpected 1-0 defeat against Real Sociedad just before the international break. Barça were focused on maintaining their position in the top eight of the UCL, a spot secured after three consecutive victories.
After less than 10 minutes, Barcelona was awarded a well-deserved penalty. “Lewy” took his responsibility. calmly waited for the Brest goalkeeper to go the wrong way before putting the ball in the back of the net. The Pole scored once more in the last minutes of the game, securing an easy 3-0 for the Spanish team.
The 36-year-old’s stats continue to impress. Lewandowski has now scored 81 goals since joining the Catalan giant in the summer of 2022, making him an all-time great of the club. This season, he not only comfortably leads the race for the Pichichi (with 15 goals in 14 La Liga games), but he is also in first position for the European Golden Boot. The latter is awarded annually to the top goalscorer across Europe’s top leagues, calculated using a points system that factors in the league’s difficulty.
FC Barcelona’s next match will be played on Saturday 30 November at 1PM (UK time) at the Camp Nou against Las Palmas.
