Following a visit to the Dortmund-based German Football Museum, Polish sports journalist Mateusz Skierawski informed his colleagues back home about an element which drew his attention in the popular exhibition.
It turns out that the German Football Museum – which tells the story of German clubs at home and abroad – omitted one of the most spectacular records in the Bundesliga. In 2021, the then Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski broke the seemingly unbreakable record of 40 goals scored by Gerd Müller in one German league season.
“There lacks a separate display commemorating the famous 41 goals scored by the captain of the Polish national team. This is especially noticeable in light of the memorabilia of players who have made a more modest mark in the history of the local league. For instance, there is a shirt of the famous Spanish footballer Raul, who played for Schalke for two years, but there is not even a photo of Lewandowski on the wall – the man who has won 23 trophies for German teams, including ten Bundesliga titles and a Champions League victory” – Skierawski told Polish media.
The presence of Bayern Munich’s Lewandowski in such an exhibition should indeed be a no-brainer. The Poles basically won everything there is to win with the Bavarian giant. He finished best scorer of the German league 7 times (6 times with Bayern) and scored a total of 312 goals in 384 Bundesliga matches. Only “Der Bomber” scored more, with 365 goals in 427 games.
Lewandowski’s Bundesliga journey is filled with record-breaking achievements, including some that had stood unchallenged for half a century. The Polish international has scored more goals than any other non-German player in Bundesliga history and was the first to win the top scorer’s award for five consecutive seasons.
