Robert Lewandowski’s last dance with Barcelona?

As the summer transfer window swirled with speculation, whispers of Robert Lewandowski’s potential departure from FC Barcelona sent ripples through the footballing world. Rumours linked the Polish striker with moves to Saudi Arabia and the MLS, tempting destinations for a player approaching the twilight of his career.

Yet, at 36 years old—set to turn 37 on 20 August 2025—Lewandowski has emphatically quashed such talk, reaffirming his commitment to the Catalan giants. In an interview with German outlet Bild, he declared, “I’ll stay next season. Right now, all I have on my mind is Barcelona.

The 2024/2025 La Liga season has been a testament to Lewandowski’s enduring brilliance. In 34 matches, he netted an astonishing 27 goals and provided 2 assists, averaging 0.91 goals per 90 minutes—a figure that places him atop Barcelona’s scoring charts and fourth among La Liga players with at least three appearances.

Overall, the Varsovian has been nothing short of impressive with the Catalan giants, with whom he already scored over 100 goals. Barcelona coach Hansi Flick, who previously guided Lewandowski to a Champions League triumph at Bayern, has hailed him as “the best central striker in the world for the last ten years.”

Lewandowski’s contract, which runs until June 2026, includes a clause that secures his stay for the 2025/26 season, provided he plays at least 55% of matches in the current campaign—a threshold he surpassed in February 2025 during a victory over Las Palmas. However, with his 37th birthday looming and the contract’s end in sight, this is likely to be his final season donning the Blaugrana shirt.

Still, what makes Lewandowski’s longevity so extraordinary is his adaptability and relentless work ethic. A technically gifted forward, he combines lethal finishing inside the box with intelligent link-up play outside it. His ability to score with both feet and his head, paired with his experience, continues to make him a nightmare for defenders. By September, “Lewy” is likely to reach an impressive 700 career goals!
